CHEMICALS
The chemicals industry converts raw materials like oil, natural gas, air, water, metals, and minerals into more than 70,000 different products. These products are used in various fields and sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and service industries. We divide the chemicals industry into the following key segments:
- Basic Chemicals: These are produced in large quantities and include organic (carbon-based) and inorganic (non-carbon-based) chemicals. Examples include ethylene and propylene, which are used in making products such as plastics, resins, and fibers.
- Specialty Chemicals: These are chemicals known for their function or performance. They can be unique molecules or mixtures of molecules known as formulations. The physical and chemical characteristics of single molecules or formulated mixtures of molecules and the composition of the mixtures influence the performance end product.
- Agricultural Chemicals: These include a variety of chemical products used in agriculture, including pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
- Pharmaceuticals: This segment comprises companies that produce medicinal products for use in health applications, including prescription drugs, vitamins, and hormones.
- Consumer Products: Goods for direct use by consumers (E.g. detergents, soaps, and cosmetics).
- Petrochemicals: Derived from petroleum or natural gas, petrochemicals are a subset of chemicals that include such substances as plastic, detergents, solvents, elastomers, and fibers such as polyester and nylon.
- Polymers: These are a large part of the industry and include all categories of plastics and man-made fibers.
