drones - inspections in the desert
Project Overview
Fox & Waterman was engaged to design and execute a large scale drone based inspection program across critical energy infrastructure located in remote desert environments. The initiative introduced advanced aerial inspection capabilities to improve safety, reduce manual field exposure, and accelerate inspection cycles across pipelines, facilities, and remote assets.
Duration: 18 months (multi-phase deployment program)
Location: Desert Region in North Africa
Client / Partner: Major International Oil Company (NOC)
The Challenge
The operator needed a safer, faster, and more reliable method to inspect long distance pipelines and remote desert assets. Traditional ground inspections were slow, labor intensive, and exposed personnel to extreme heat and hazardous terrain. The program required a partner capable of designing the drone inspection architecture, integrating advanced imaging technologies, training field teams, and executing the inspections at scale — while enabling rapid, data driven responses to emerging issues.
Our Role
Fox & Waterman executed the full drone inspection program, including:
• Design of the drone based inspection framework• Selection and integration of drone platforms, sensors, and imaging systems• Development of flight plans, inspection routes, and safety protocols• Execution of aerial inspections across remote desert assets• Thermal imaging, high resolution photography, and anomaly detection• Training of client personnel in drone operations and data interpretation• Creation of standardized reporting and digital inspection records
AI Driven Analytics & Post Inspection Intelligence
Following each inspection cycle, Fox & Waterman deployed an integrated AI driven analytics engine to transform raw drone imagery into actionable operational intelligence. This included:
• Automated detection of corrosion, leaks, structural anomalies, and thermal irregularities• AI powered pattern recognition to identify early stage degradation• Digital comparison against historical baselines to detect emerging risks• Near real time alerts to maintenance and safety teams• Prioritization of interventions based on severity and operational impact• Integration with the operator’s maintenance management system (CMMS)• Generation of digital dashboards for engineering, reliability, and HSE teams
This allowed the operator to move from slow, manual inspections to a continuous, data driven monitoring model.
impact
The program delivered a safer, faster, and more accurate inspection capability across desert infrastructure. Inspection times were significantly reduced, personnel exposure to hazardous environments was minimized, and the operator gained a scalable, technology driven method for monitoring remote assets. Most importantly, AI driven analytics enabled near real time maintenance and safety responses, improving reliability, reducing downtime, and strengthening asset integrity across the entire network.
